This week in New York, it’s the world premiere of one of director Quentin Dupieux’s most ambitious series—the two-part BBC Sherlock movie, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. It’s also the premiere of two new video shorts—the second of which is the first feature length film adaptation of the new series.
In the first, titled “The Case,” we meet the sleuth, Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch), who is not yet a detective. In the last, entitled “I’m The One,” the eponymous detective returns to his home town of London to pursue the murder of the father of his friend, Mrs. Hudson (Gillian Anderson). This isn’t the first in a series of Sherlock shorts, but it is the first of them to be directed by Tarantino.
The second one looks just as good and plays just as well, with the same wonderful, slow shot work and wonderful, slow camera movements, but the action is sped up. We get to see one key component of Sherlock Holmes that the others don’t: his detective technique. It’s amazing stuff.
If you’re unfamiliar with the series, and you don’t know anyone who hasn’t at least seen an episode, this is a short that should do wonders for your enjoyment. And if you’re a fan, if you haven’t yet seen the series, you should watch these two, and then maybe make up your mind about when you’ll be watching a big feature. For now, you can watch both of these videos here:
