With the 2017 NFL draft behind us, the Buffalo Sabres are gearing up for the upcoming training camp and hoping to have a few new faces in the team’s opening day lineup.
One of the most notable newcomers this year is defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen. He was drafted by the Minnesota Wild in 2013 and immediately made his name by putting up big numbers for the Wild.
The 2014-15 season was his first with the Sabres and he quickly developed into a consistent two-way defenseman for the team. The following season, he was selected to Team Finland at the World Championship and it was there that he made a name for himself as a rookie for the tournament as well as another player selected in the lottery to the AHL’s Rochester Americans.
Ristolainen would have been going into his third NHL season and his fourth year in the NHL would have been his second with Buffalo. He was brought in to be a veteran defender, not a breakout star. He fit the bill and it will be interesting to see if the team can capitalize off those talents they have.
Ristolainen is an energetic guy and will be competing for a job in the Sabres blueline and it will make a world of difference for him and the Sabres to see him play in a game against an opponent who is more aggressive than the team he will be playing for.
