Not so fast. The idea that dancing on the edge of the circle (the “edge” in other words) gives abs is pure fantasy. While it is true that dancing on the line may sometimes make some people “waste” more energy than they could otherwise expend, it does not guarantee the same energy will dissipate as easily. The “edge” isn’t just on the edge of the circle so much as it is on the floor; in fact, dancing is probably a more effective exercise if you don’t want to spend the whole time sitting on the edge. (And it may be true that some dancers do get a nice surge of energy, albeit a bit too rapid for their comfort.)
On the other hand, it may also be true that, in some cases, dancing on the edge may be as ineffective as not exercising at all. In that case, in a given moment, the benefit of “fiddling” with the dance (to move one’s body, to breathe, etc.) will probably outweigh the benefit of dancing. But this point, too, is pure fantasy. While it is true that dancers sometimes spend more time in the air or on the ball than they do on the dance floor, this is not a given; it depends on what kind of dancers you are, how much you love dancing and, for the most part, how much exercise you might actually like doing once in a while.
And there is no such thing as “perfect” dancing. If you want to lose weight, for example, dancing is never more than 50 percent effective. At one moment in time, the edge isn’t on the floor. At another moment, it’s the dance floor. Even if you’ve found a “perfect” moment in which dance on the edge of the circle works better for you, chances are you won’t find that point again, for any other reason. Just as some people will still find dancing useful, others are not going to get much benefit out of it, and some will even find it harmful.
What we can say with certainty is that dancing on the edge of the circle is not going to give you the results you want, in any number of ways. (If you want to know more about the benefits and drawbacks of different types of dance, read my article “Do You Know Your Dance?” )
