Maybe you could.
It’s true, though. No one who’s tried it can deny that they want to lose weight. They just don’t know where to start.
What if you could lose weight by losing only 10lbs?
That’s what a team of researchers in Australia have done. Their results, which have just been published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, found that simply losing 10lbs of fat could help you lose up to 5lb of weight over the course of a year!
What did they do? They decided to test a group of 12 men and 12 women who had all signed up for a 6-month weight loss programme and were each told they would lose 20 per cent of their body weight. All the participants had one month to follow their programme and were then split into two groups. One group was instructed to lose only 10lb of fat. For the other group the same weight loss was planned, but with a total weight loss of only 10lb.
Then the participants were put through a series of tests to see what difference different weight loss strategies (and their ability to maintain their weight loss over a longer period) had made.
So, if you were told to lose 10lbs of fat you would lose 5lb of healthy weight. With that weight loss you would then need to lose only 8lb of fat.
The average of all 12 participants who failed to lose 10lb of fat, who were all already very overweight or obese after the program was started, lost an average of 11lb of fat over the course of a year and by the end of it all all had lost a total of 5lb.
Does a 10lb cut of fat make you a healthier person?
No. According to one study that followed more than 100 overweight and obese men in the US there was no difference in their health, quality or mortality between those who lost 10lb of fat between the group on a diet based on animal fats such as butter and margarine or those on a higher fat diet. The participants were all doing the same amount of exercise and didn’t change their lifestyles in any meaningful way.
What do you think?
Do 20lbs make the difference?
There are some things you need to consider before you start the process. First of all, you need to be healthy. This means that your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure-related health issues were all well below 300mg/dl.
