The U.S. Congress and the Obama administration are taking action to protect some of the most vulnerable Americans and refugees, by providing them with more resources, training and protection, and setting up new systems and policies that would better protect them.
The Obama administration’s executive action on Friday to extend refugee relief for six months does not make a difference to most Syrians who are now in the U.S., according to data from the State Department’s Refugee Processing Center in Washington, who said they’d be unable to visit their home in an attempt to obtain a visa despite continuing assurances from U.S. government officials.
The state of Maryland is planning to send some Syrian refugees to a camp where there also are hundreds of unaccompanied minors.
“I think the big thing we’re concerned with is making sure that refugees are safe, are not victimized, and are able to continue their future in the U.S.,” State Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Trudeau told reporters.
The House of Representatives has reached a “fiscal cliff” deal in which a tax hike will be on the table as part of a $1.6 trillion package of spending cuts and revenue measures aimed at closing the deficit and averting the second recession since the Great Recession.
The Associated Press reported the deal, which was reached Tuesday night, means that Democrats are now the most likely to support the legislation, which needs at least 218 votes in the Senate, and, if it reaches the president’s desk, could be signed by his signature. A new ABC News/Washington Post/Wall Street Journal poll shows 50 percent of Americans disapprove of the deal.
Republican leaders in the House say they will push forward on the debt limit and spending cuts on their own to reach a broader deal. But this deal will be difficult going forward – the U.S. is spending more than $2 trillion, down from the peak of $3.7 trillion in the Obama administration’s first year.
