When I started drawing back in elementary school I didn’t know that pencil was the art medium. I wanted to learn it though.
I’m now taking my first art class in college where you teach by looking at a picture. What do you do?
Well, first of all, we look at the drawing and we learn how the piece came together. In my first art class in college a guy showed us his pencil and a drawing. There is a little box with a little plastic object in it. We took it and we were very, very careful. We didn’t have any ink from the start, all we had were pencils. He wanted us to know how he used them so he didn’t just take them and draw them. He asked them to draw a pencil, and if they could, or if they didn’t know how to use the pencil, he showed them how to draw a pencil, like that. It’s very effective and it really helps. I love it.
This is really what you’ve been talking about, “taking it and understanding how it came together.” When does this apply?
When you’re drawing you are using those pencils for the most part. Some of them are really good, some of them are really bad, so it really helps to be able to understand what they are doing. You’re using the pencils to make something that is going to be real solid. So, before I started drawing, I was doing them like that and the pencils were really like little tubes that people put in their paper or on their backs of their neck. And they put on these hats, on their belts or in their purses because they knew that they were going to be wearing them and that’s how it was. They were only using those pencils. In my drawing classes I have the students drawing the things they do or that they want, then I tell them what I use the pencil for.
So, when I talk to you about not just knowing how it came together (because you are taking an art class for free now, you don’t have to pay for your art teacher), but understanding how a pencil works, what are your thoughts on what “taking it and understanding how it came together” means? Do you think it’s hard to be a master?
It’s hard for me because I’ve been doing it for so long. When something changes, you can’t be ready for it. It seems so important to me,
