A lot of people are asking why I don’t write in English and I’ll tell them my solution is simple: I’m a native American who has lived in China for almost 10 years and have a lot to learn about the culture.

You don’t have to live in China to be a true-blue American. Just a short drive south of the city of Chongqing and you’ll find a vast expanse of farmland stretching out in all directions.

The Chinese language is quite different from the English that you’re probably used to. Many people who have lived on the other side of the Pacific Ocean in the States will tell you Mandarin is the most familiar of the two languages. The reason why is easy to spot: if you speak Chinese or try to pronounce it, you need to have a good ear.

When I was living in China for 7 months in 2014, I began speaking little Mandarin with the exception of a few words that didn’t mean anything to me. This is not because I spoke it poorly, but because I learned it through word association. Here’s a sample:

“Oh? Do you have a phone?” – Me

“Yes, I did. It works here.
