Moral: The more you draw at once, the more time it takes. When we first began teaching with a group of students, almost every subject was drawn at once. It was very easy. When you do that much at once, and do it every day for a long time, the art becomes very difficult. Then you realize that you can’t draw at the same time, and even when you are drawing at the same time, you don’t learn the same lesson. To draw the same thing that you already learned was really tough. It’s really difficult to learn when you draw the same thing multiple times, or even once, in the same moment.
But you learned by studying, right?
Moral: That was our way of teaching. We would get students into the studio by showing them drawings and the way we do our drawings. They were more interested in the fact that we did, which was really helpful. I think we probably made some fundamental mistakes and didn’t take advantage of the things we knew. One of the mistakes we made was we didn’t explain how we did the drawing. When we showed our sketches to students, they always started asking questions: Did you draw a triangle? How are you getting this? We knew we had to learn by example. You learn by doing.
That’s why you’ve had so many students who went from drawing one drawing at a time to learning by watching you and how we did the drawing?
Moral: That’s one thing all the studios we had in Japan trained on, doing that. There’s one girl who studied with us for about three years because she’s so into drawing and I think she really learned how to learn. I think we’ve had a lot of different styles, though. We have a lot of people from other countries. We were the only studio here doing traditional Korean art, and our clients were mainly Asians.
But I wonder if you had different influences than most artists? Do you have anyone particular?
Moral: The people who are the real inspirations were people from my family. I grew up with my parents in Japan, so for most of my childhood there were never really Japanese cartoons. They weren’t really part of my life, so I didn’t have much of a chance to watch them. Most of the people that have a connection to Japan are Japanese Americans.
