Are art classes worth it? – Virtual Instructor Blog

When I started my first art class as an undergrad, I didn’t realize how much time and effort it would take! After working on and off for several years, I decided to take one in college just to get this down. It was amazing.

What has been the worst art class you’ve ever had?

Oh! That’s super hard to choose. I’m a big believer in not letting the worst class happen. It’s been a little bit like that all the time. That and my art teacher was awesome!

What tips would you give to someone considering taking an art class?

I try to remember, don’t give up, and do this, so it can be a good experience. Don’t let the fact I’m not good at it stop you! There are a million different ways you can be a good artist!

The following statement was originally published on Oct. 7, 2009 on the American Civil Liberties Union website.

When a child is raped, the consequences of the rape are devastating. The child, at 14 months old, is a victim of sexual abuse (sometimes called child sexual assault). The consequences are even worse if the abuse is done at a place other than a home or with someone other than her own parents. And the consequences continue as the person who abused the child grows older.

Since the late 1990s, more children have been raped. While these statistics are based on data from 2002, the rate of rape has been steadily increasing. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) estimated in 2001 that approximately 30,000 children were sexually victimized each year; that number has climbed steadily. While this increase in child sexual crime has been well publicized, there is a much smaller number of people who have been raped by peers, family members or strangers.

In most cases, a child who has been sexually molested at the age of 14 or 15 is treated in school as having been assaulted by someone older than 5 years younger. This is often accompanied by denials and denial of consent as to if the child had consented. For some of these kids, the issue of whether the rape was unwanted has become a “he said, she said” issue for many years. Many of these girls who were raped will never speak up again in school after the experience. That is the consequence of a lack of support from their school and other authorities.
