SOUTH BEND, Ind. — There’s no doubt that the San Diego Chargers have a chance to run the table in the AFC West, a group that can be defined by their strength as a unit. There’s also no doubt they have the potential to win the division with an incredibly talented and balanced unit.

But how will that translate into wins and losses?

On Sunday, with rookie receiver Tyrell Williams’ status up in the air, the Chargers faced a critical challenge in keeping their quarterback-starved defense on the field.

With Williams out, the Chargers played better on defense, holding their opponents to one first-half field goal and a season-low 18 points.

That included a pair of big plays from rookie defensive lineman Kendall Reyes, who was able to block a 54-yard field goal attempt and a 40-yard interception return by Phillip Rivers to keep the Chargers within two points late in the third quarter.

It’s the kind of story the Chargers can put into their season storylines coming out of practice Monday, and it should be a great selling point for an audience that has to tune in to their weekly game against the Chargers on Monday Night Football, where their two-game winning streak will go out the window.

San Diego is coming off of an NFC Divisional Round loss to the Seattle Seahawks, whose defense was exposed in the end zone late in the game. The Chargers are 3-7 against the Seahawks in Los Angeles, but last season’s Super Bowl-winning Chargers can win a rematch against them, assuming they’re able to field a defense that will allow the opposition to convert just two of 12 third downs when they run those plays.
