The ability to play any instrumental instrument at all is called a musical aptitude, and you must have that musical aptitude to play viola or cello. When there is a lack of musical aptitude in a child (or a young child) we call “Music Disorder” or ‘sensitivity to music’.

What causes Music Disorder?

Children and adolescents with Music Disorder (also known as Sensitization to Music), often have a family history of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or a childhood history of hearing and speaking impairments. They also have an increased sensitivity to music, especially classical Western music. Some evidence suggests that hearing loss may also be one major cause of Music Disorder.

The Genetics of Music

Most research into the genetic basis of the disorder indicates that the majority of the cases are inherited as either autosomal and/or X-linked recessive traits. However, some research studies have shown that the presence of certain genes can increase the risk of the disorder.

Research from Harvard School of Public Health has identified genes involved in the regulation of neurotransmitters (including serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine) and brain development. These have been found to be the most common risk factors for Music Disorder. Other studies have also found that genes involved in inflammation may be one of the risk factors associated with Music Disorder.

Children affected by Music Disorder usually have an impaired ability to process information quickly. They tend to process verbal language using short term memory, even while hearing music, and this may be especially pronounced in music-trained children. They are often unable to learn complex concepts quickly enough to read a complex text.

Other genes associated with music can include a polymorphism in the gene for serotonin. The serotonin gene is a key gene in serotonin transport across the blood brain barrier. Serotonin plays a role in how brain cells communicate with each other and this interaction provides a number of protective mechanisms.

The Genetics of Sensitivity to Music

As an adult, if the person has Sensitivity to Music as a cause of that disorder, then their ability to process information and develop strategies to deal with situations more appropriately may be impaired and they may also have issues with social relationships. They may also feel a lack of purpose at home, and become more introverted.

Some studies have found that an increased prevalence of Sensitivity to Music is a risk factor for the Developmental Disorders of Autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). However
