With the BJP’s Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi taking a ‘zero tolerance’ approach to anti-national slogans, the government of Maharashtra has decided to punish those involved, Home Minister R.R. Patil said.
Patil today said that anyone found using anti-national slogans will be slapped with a fine of Rs. 5,000 or Rs. 8,000, whichever is higher, under the Maharashtra Act.
A BJP spokesperson has clarified that those found using anti-national slogans will be punished under section 153 of the Indian Penal Code.
“We will not tolerate anti-national slogans,” BJP Maharashtra President Sanjay Raut claimed yesterday.
During the ‘Ram Navami’ celebrations organized a week back, many people were seen using anti-national slogans on the roads. The issue was later raised with Mr. Modi who had directed police to crack down on anti-national slogans, a day after a mob pelted stones on a train bound for Gujarat from Mumbai, injuring several people on Tuesday.
“We are considering all possible options. I will speak to the Home Minister (Ram Madhav) about these options. Our government is on a constant vigil against all anti-national actions. It is clear that the government of Maharashtra is taking the anti-national stand for the very first time,” said Raut today.
