A man is facing criminal charges after allegedly setting fire to the house of a woman who was in the process of breaking up with him, the New York Police Department announced late Thursday.

The woman had said she was ending the relationship with the man after she learned he was not “perfect” but instead lived “a lot of his habits, a lot of his habits that I don’t want to see in my life,” police spokesman Stephen Davis said.

The woman, identified as 41-year-old Kaitlin Aloisi of Rochester, told officers that two days prior she had gone into his basement and discovered several matches. She told investigators that she started putting the matches out, and in the process caused a smoke alarm in the downstairs bedroom to go off, Davis said.

She said she ran downstairs and discovered smoke coming from the walls from the man’s backyard down the stairs, where it was extinguished shortly after she exited the apartment.

Once firefighters arrived on the scene and cut the fire from the attic, they found “two small patches” of smoke on the ceiling and floor, Davis said.

Fire officials estimated the extent of the damage to the house, where they found the woman’s mother-in-law deceased, according to police.

An investigation into the incident by detectives of the Bronx Criminal Intelligence Bureau began and included interviews with the victim, as well as the woman who was with her at the time of the incident, Davis said.

Police were unable to contact the victim when she tried contacting them after police questioned her after the discovery of the fire, Davis said.

No one was injured in the incident, Davis said.

The man who faces charges, identified as 38-year-old Joseph Nunez of West Brighton, is scheduled to appear in Manhattan Criminal Court Friday morning. He faces charges including arson, illegal possession of arsonist’s equipment, and criminal mischief, according
