A new study finds a link between the use of high salt diets and an increase in the number of individuals with Type 2 diabetes, which is a leading cause of death in the developing world.

The study looked at data from eight villages in Nepal, where the diets of some of the 10,000 villagers were analyzed under four different diets: the HRA (high salt) diet, the SDA (salt-dense) diet, the DHA (docosahexaenoic acid, a type of fatty acid) diet [1], and the MDA (medium-chain triglycerides) diet.

The diets were designed to contain different levels of salt, fat and fiber. The researchers found the SDA, the DHA, and the total salt content in the diets varied little across the groups. However, the SDA diet and the DHA diet led to higher blood glucose levels.

People who ate the lowest numbers of grains and dairy in the DHA diet also had the highest percentage of triglycerides and cholesterol. They had higher blood levels of the “bad” long-chain omega 3 fatty acids ALA and DHA compared to those who ate the highest values of grains and dairy. The researchers said such diets increase blood levels of fats like DHA and have negative effects on blood glucose.
