The National Security Agency’s PRISM program allows U.S. intelligence operatives to monitor vast amounts of email and phone data of users around the world, according to news reports. The program reportedly allows the agency “to monitor the entire internet.”
One report, from the Guardian, which cites documents leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, said the NSA is able to tap into data stored at the major internet service providers within the United States, such as Verizon and AT&T.
“The NSA collects massive amounts of data about the internet,” the report claims. It lists phone and email identifiers, the times of calls to targets, and IP addresses; the report provides no evidence that this is done directly by NSA employees.
The NSA, according to a government spokesman, did not deny the Guardian’s story by confirming or denying whether it spied on the foreign servers hosting data of foreign nationals. The NSA declined to comment on the report.
