The first time I tried to work out, I went all out and was able to run 10 kilometers. If I got the chance again, I would run 200 kilometers.
Can you help me take my mind off the stresses in my house and in my family life?
I do a good amount of reading. I read one and a quarter to two books per week. The book I read for the first time yesterday in my office was called “The Power of Habit.” It’s based on the old concept of the “foolproof” habit. How to get into the habit of taking an action when things aren’t going quite as planned.
Have you had thoughts like this one before? And what was your most recent thought?
I used to have these, but it’s much harder with technology. At the beginning of my training phase, I used to always have these same thoughts during workouts, and my mindset changed. I became proactive instead of reactive and my focus improved. I was more calm and focused while I was off-loading. It has also improved my posture.
What is it about physical activity, and the health benefits, that really struck you about this story?
There has never been a better time to be a runner than today. I’m 40, and this is the first time ever I’ve been able to do a marathon without breaking a sweat, and I’ve never done that before.
What keeps you going when you’re not running?
I love working out. It is one of my favorite hobbies. I feel good, get big, and lose weight and feel great about myself, even though I don’t have kids yet. When I run, I feel like a kid again. I have a younger mindset now, but my body remembers better so I haven’t lost any weight.
What do you find most surprising, though, about your experience in the marathon on April 20, 2014?
I felt like I had a lot of fun during the race. There were a lot of other races I did as a kid that were less “fun” than today. So if I think about it in those terms, there are a lot of similarities to what was going through my mind when I ran the marathon.
What makes you want to go again?
I never gave up on running. Not even when it was a little hard on me. I want to continue to
