So let’s say today you’re eating a small bag of potato chips – which are a small handful at very best to begin with – and they need to bring you some energy. It’s as simple as mixing the ingredients – and that’s pretty much it.

Now, on the flip side of the same coin in some cases, you also need to use solar energy. It’s quite simple – all you need is what’s called a “battery.” Like the potato, your battery is made up of sodium chloride solution (commonly known as lukewarm tap water) and what amounts to potassium hydroxide.
The potassium hydroxide helps you keep your potato in place, and makes certain it doesn’t float around inside the tin. But just for fun here, let’s just say you’re working out here and don’t have any lukewarm water handy. And you’ve got a bag of potato chips to get you through the day, so they might as well be fully charged in your bag to get you past the snack.
So how hard would it be to just heat a few tablespoons of salt up into your potato? Hard, it seems. According to this study, heating salt about one-third and then covering it, allowing it to cool and then re-covering the salt is able to give you as much energy as if you just turned your stove on at all times.
