In 1958, the physicist Hugh Gauss discovered in his lab that people could use it to turn light into electricity via a process called photolysis. Gauss found that when electrons in water vapor were heated to high temperatures (say, 200 K), which is what electricity is created, they could be accelerated to a high enough speed and separated from their atoms by the heat. When the heat was removed, they were left with free electrons. He then realized that when one of these free electrons, a positron, split from its hydrogen atom, electrons of a different type can make the same trip for the same reason. Since the electron is the same kind of thing as the hydrogen atom in water, the two types of free electrons can be used to increase its value.
